How to Sing Better?

How to Sing Better

Powerful singing puts a smile on every face. It can bring tears and tear down walls. Beautiful songs have the capacity to evoke emotions like romance, nostalgia, joy, fun, melancholy, and even revolutions. Though melodious voices are purely hereditary or as everyone says “God-given gift,” singing beautifully comes from a lot of practice and training. Many people who love singing does not even try their luck in singing because they have no sweet voice. Any person who has a love for music and has the capacity to learn can improve their singing.

The following are some very basic ways to find the spark in your singing and pursue singing as your hobby or even as your career.

Finding Your Unique Style

Everyone has their own voice range. When one finds out what is their most suitable and comfortable voice range then they have come a long way. What is the voice range? Voice range is the measurement of octaves one is able to sing (lowest to the highest notes). We can find the range by singing from the lowest note to the highest until you are able to reach the next highest note. Based on these voice ranges there are voice types and these are bass, alto, baritone, tenor, countertenor, mezzo-soprano, and soprano.

While we focus on voice range there is one more factor that we can keep in mind and find our unique style and it is tessitura. Tessitura, an Italian word can be directly translated into English as ‘texture.’ It is the pitch level of a voice range. Once we find the tessitura we can concentrate on expanding our range by constant training.

Molding Your Voice

What we usually do during a heavy workout in the gym, we breathe in and out, we warm up, we drink a lot of water, we push ourselves to cross our limits. The same applies to sing too. It is like an exercise to the vocal cord muscles. We need to do a lot of breathing exercises before we start to sing. One can warm up by singing notes C-D-E-F-G-F-E-D-C.

Choosing the right posture for singing is an important factor to improve our singing. Standing while singing is more preferable than sitting, keeping your chin slightly parallel to the ground, with relaxed shoulders and firm abdomen can give you an open and clear singing.

Hearing to music daily and singing along with the music is the most simple and easy way to learn singing. For a person who loves singing and wants to improve the way he/she sings, he needs to carefully listen to the song and note all the fine details and try to replicate it, which will automatically put the notes in the right place.

Molding your voice calls for a long-term and dedicated practice. It needs precision and a lot of love towards singing. Daily training is necessary for refining our music skills. No musician was born overnight, it was practice and training that fashioned their voice to enable them to become one.

There is no field where technology has put its signature on and singing has a no different story. There are many apps nowadays that will help us in training our voice to extend our singing ability. Some are fun applications and some truly professional ones, some can be free of cost and some charging fees.

This point takes me to the most important and traditional form of training, which is to learn from a master. Still very much prevalent and efficient, finding the best teacher will be a game-changer for a person who would like to take up singing as a profession. A good teacher will have very accurate tricks and techniques to modulate once voice, to identify notes, to steer through different styles, etc. If you feel you need to take your singing very seriously, it will be highly recommendable to find a good music trainer and continue training in his/her guidance.

Gaining Confidence

As important as or a little more important than all the things mentioned above, it is singing confidently. Confidence adds an extra charm to singing. This is the magic that gives music life. Confident singing can move hearts.

Singing out loud for one to hear themselves can be the first step to boost your confidence. We can record our voice while singing and understand where we stand and improve thereby. Singing for people who enjoy music and who will criticize and correct us constructively will be a stepping stone to become a good singer.

Another way to improve singing and gain confidence is to join a choir. It will readily give us a platform to hear new songs, learn different forms of singing, meet people who love singing and is going through the same mental process as ourselves and above all we can train our voice and learn to accommodate others in our singing.

Karaoke is another good way to enhance our confidence and it can be fun at the same time a great learning experience. It can give us a chance to identify our talent in solo or duet singing too.

Conclusion

Singing can be improved in all the above-mentioned ways. As in early scriptures and myths, there had been individuals who had impressed God by their singing, there had been persons who had brought down rains with their singing. Music and broadly singing has a great power to heal diseases and mend broken hearts. These all come with practice but what is above all these is love for music. If there is no love or passion towards the art then all practice and practical things listed above will go into vain.

So next time you who loves singing is held aback by the feeling that my voice is not as sweet or sharp as some other singer can put rest all those inhibitions and try their luck on singing as well. It is sure that you will find your sweet voice in there somewhere and will start enjoying your own singing and will be able to evoke emotions in other people’s hearts.
